Dress the Part

Styling is far from rocket science and does not need a manual or a guide. Your style is really just you, your body, your mood and your clothes working in harmony. Your style is who you are and how you want to be treated all in one delicate parcel. With this in mind and my upbringing, my style has always been polished and classy with no off days. However, as I moved from blogging out of coincidence (taking blog pictures of my outfits when I'm out) to blogging out of necessity (actually dressing up solely for blog pictures because my outings have reduced), I lost something. I found the need to look the opposite of what my style normally encompasses. I definitely did not slump into trashiness, but for comfort's sake, I slipped into the "borderline basic" look. I had seen everything in my closet way too many times - on my blog so those basic clothes became my safe haven. I went from not owning tees to having one in a variety of colors, and not wearing them (except during finals week) to wearing them almost everyday. My jeans and pants became looser and as you are about to see, ripped. I went from wearing lots of accessories to wearing nothing. In fact, these days, if I could leave my house with the popular blue and white Nigerian flip flops, a pair of slacks and a tee, I would. But on the morning of May 1st, as I woke up to get ready for my meeting, I heard "Dress the Part" and complied without hesitation. I knew I had to do it. I knew I had to save my style. When I discussed this with some people not too long ago, they cited the example of the hair dresser who never has her hair done or the make-up artist who never wears make up. I now know that it is a side effect of being too deep into what I'm doing and not caring about putting up a front or a look, but for my sake, I have made the resolve to dress the part. Styling is what I do and I have to be an embodiment of my work.
