It's been really quiet here on my blog but if you stay connected with me via Instagram, you will know that I am very much in touch with everything, including the current state of things on this side of the world - cops getting away with murder and what not. It's truly sad and I really don't want to go in depth into this subject as it has been a heavy couple of weeks for anyone who has been following the news and feels concerned for the lives of black men in America. It is terrifying to think that on the day we throw a tantrum over a skittles craving, our brothers, boyfriends, husbands or friends may step out to get this for us at the corner store and not return because of their skin color. In addition to being more vigilant and generally aware, I pray for our men to not just survive, but to be able to live through this even though they feel threatened everyday by the people with the mandate to protect the nation - the police.
Now I'll go on to discuss about the closet of Ms. Annalise Keating, the lead character in this fall's new show by the brilliant Shonda Rhimes, How To Get Away With Murder (major cringe at the correlation between this and the previous subject matter!!! ). Update: I think this show's name should be changed. I truly hope I can take your attention away from the gloominess of the real world just for a little, to last the duration of this post and hopefully longer into the rest of your day.
Annalise is THE LAW. I'm sorry but I couldn't come up with a better description of this character which Viola Davis plays out so remarkably well.
The only thing I would change about this show is Annalise Keating's closet. If a Criminal Law professor leads a life so dark yet so revered, it's Annalise and although her career is the focus of this show, her clothes should certainly match her demeanor from time to time. It's why Scandal's Kerry Washington is such a sensation, garnering enough rave to launch a clothing line with The Limited.
So I've created this lookbook with Annalise's complex character in mind, throwing in some suggested new looks on the way.
Court and Teaching Outfits: We've seen her fight her cases in court with only words. We've also seen and can never forget the opening outfit of this show - the burgundy leather jacket which was painfully tight yet commanding. These looks mean business yet they enhance that rare sexual appeal that Annalise manages to tuck away until after hours.
Though she has a swarm of students at her beck and call, Annalise is a one-woman-army and this outfit below demonstrates that without being gaudy. The tones and colors are just right and would make a great pairing with that glowing skin of hers.
Annalise After Dark: Annalise, once in a while, please bare your soul. Or maybe not. Still, we would like to see her step into clothes other than her Criminal Law clothes. The cloak in this outfit reminds me of the "Invisibility Cloak" in Harry Potter (I've only read and seen the first book/movie. Judge not). So we definitely know Wes, her student and former Harry Potter cast knows how to make that magic work. Her feet also need a break from closed-toe shoes, hence the sandals.
Seeing as Annalise is now a widow, my former wish might soon be granted. I hope we will be seeing more of her and her boyfriend hanging out or maybe finally going on a hot date. And despite the fact that Annalise is so unpredictable, it will be really refreshing to see her in a non-figure hugging dress like this vintage dress. It's essentially showing her clad in Sam's crimson red blood, as suggested by the last episode. Because even when Coco Chanel said "A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous", she did not know Annalise would exist...and she will be more.
And lastly, you will never understand or decode Annalise.
She is an Optical Illusion.
Thank you for viewing my Lookbook. You can share any of these looks on Instagram with the tag #AnnaliseNeedsANewCloset and don't forget to add #StyledbyMemkoh. Let's see if Shonda will listen. :)
