It seems like perfect timing. Right when I was in the process of brainstorming for a new name to re-brand my blog with, 2 sisters reached out to me thereby bringing out the "Service" bit of my life which I had not previously shared with you. Read on... How I knew about Memunatu:

In the Spring of 2012, I attended the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) Annual Meeting, a life impacting experience. Prior to my arrival at this meeting, we were required to host a meet up in our respective cities and that's where I met the ladies behind Memunatu Magazine. I loved their idea, which was at the time entered for the Echoing Green Global Fellowship (they eventually made it to the Semifinals). I'll never forget how excited they were when they met Cheryl Dorsey, the President of Echoing Green, after one of the sessions. What a coincidence! I'll talk about CGI U in a bit.

Brief Overview of Memunatu:

Memunatu Magazine was named after Fatmata and Mariama Kabia's mother. Memunatu is a magazine aimed at providing supplemental reading materials including but not limited to educational resources, summer readings, health and beauty tips, entrepreneurial skills and other tips geared at strengthening the overall well-being of the West African girl, starting with Sierra Leone. Last month, Fatmata and Mariama Kabia reached out to me to serve as one of the Campaign Managers for Memunatu and I heartily accepted. I am delighted to be a part of their journey, while simultaneously working towards mine. It's a learning and serving opportunity I couldn't pass up.

Memunatu Magazine Launch:

Before our official launch in February, we're embarking on smaller launch campaigns in several cities (see below) and an Indiegogo crowd-sourcing campaign (Oct. 7 - Nov. 21st) to fund the cost of magazine production. The twins have worked so hard to produce many iterations of this magazine and we need your help to get it in the hands of girls in Sierra Leone.

Quick overview of the CGI U Meeting:

College students around the world propose ideas to make a change in one of 5 Focus Areas: Education, Environment and Climate Change, Peace and Human Rights, Poverty Alleviation and Public Health. You'll soon find out why I knew that in that order, even in my sleep.

These ideas are called Commitments to Action because after CGI U aims at "Turning Ideas into Action".

In a nutshell, the CGI U Annual Meeting is a 2 day, partly overwhelming, mostly life changing conference where passionate individuals and future change makers rub minds together to deliberate on the best ways to realize their commitment goals through Skill Sessions, Plenary Sessions, Working Sessions and Office Hours. The Plenary Sessions, Working Sessions and Office Hours are facilitated by bigger change makers and experts in various fields who give us a reality check on our oh-so-mind-blowing ideas. Among these visionary leaders are President Bill Clinton and his daughter, Chelsea Clinton, who are always in attendance.

The Skill Sessions are led by CGI U Alumni who attended a previous meeting and have made significant progress with their project. It is pretty much the time when you realize that your idea is truly fathomable. From Ashifi Gogo (CGI U Alumni and founder of Sproxil), to Jada Pinkett Smith (Actress and Human Rights Advocate) CGI U is an experience of a lifetime. It was at the CGI U 2012 meeting that I learned the importance of failure and at CGI U 2013, I learned how to build a team and the strength of collaborations. There's so much wisdom shared at this meeting which is why I said earlier that it is partly overwhelming. At the end of it all, there's that single most important message that resonates with you. Hold on to it!

The best part of CGI U is that it ends with a day of service in the neighborhood surrounding the host college (see pictures).

I strongly encourage any college student reading this to apply for the CGI U 2015 meeting which will be held at the University of Miami, Florida. This meeting is absolutely free to attend! Travel assistance is also offered, but you must apply by October 17, 2014. Final application deadline is December 1, 2014. Because I once served as the Campus Representative for Drexel University, I'm totally open to answering any questions you may have about CGI U and/or reviewing your application materials. Send an email to memkohsblog@gmail.com.
